MRM (Modified Radical Mastoidectomy)
The Modified Radical Mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure conducted by ENT surgeons in order to remove mastoid air cells is a person is suffering from Mastoiditis. The surgery is advised in case of cholesteatoma. It is a condition where in the middle ear develops a non-cancerous growth.
Mastoiditis is a form of bacterial infection which may occur in the mastoid air cells in ear. The air cells protect the ear. These mastoid cells are a part of the middle ear.
What if I leave it untreated?
Any form of infection, if not treated may spread to other parts of the body causing further health issues. In case of cholesteatoma or skin cyst, if not removed may become infectious and may lead to problems like:
- Facial Palsy or compression of facial nerve
- Ear drainage
How long is the procedure?
The procedure only takes a couple of hour and can be done at the day care. You need not to get admitted overnight for an MRM surgery.

The surgeon will make a small incisionto reach the middle ear & remove the mastoid air cells. The aim is to avoid any infection and to remove the affected area.The posterior & superior canal wall of the ear is kept intact.The surgery helps in recreating the area in order to retain normal hearing.
