Medical Oncology Program
At BLK Cancer Centre, we offer medical oncology treatment along with comprehensive patient care and a multidisciplinary approach. Our well-qualified medical oncologists deal with chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy in conjunction with chemotherapy. They are also equipped to manage side effects of chemotherapy.
The goal of chemotherapy is to kill cancer cells or slow their growth. Chemotherapy is a type of treatment that includes medication or a combination of medication, depending on the type of cancer. The treatment is lengthy and can be quite painful for a patient. Also, the side-effects like weight and hair loss can take emotional toll on a patient. At that time, it is the family and the doctors who work together to help a patient in dealing with the situation.
How does chemotherapy work?
When chemotherapy drugs enter the blood stream, they end up killing cells in the process of splitting into 2 new cells. Since cancer cells divide much more than normal cells, chemotherapy is more likely to kill them.
Chemotherapy is administered either by giving a tablet or capsule, or by injection through a vein into the bloodstream. Sometimes it is also done through a PICC line (a thin, soft, long catheter that is inserted into a vein) or a chemo port. If you are at risk of a specific infection, you may also be given preventative antibiotics.
Precautions to avoid infections during treatment:
- Ensure you don’t hurt yourself while using scissors, needles or knives.
- Change your bed linen regularly.
- Avoid crowded places and inhaling dust.
- Stay away from people who have an infectious or contagious disease.
- Use a disinfectant to keep your surroundings clean.
- Always wash your hands with an alcoholic hand rub.
- Maintain personal hygiene.
- Keep your mouth and teeth clean after meals.
- Use a soft toothbrush to avoid hurting gums.
Side effects of Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy can sometimes affect normal, healthy cells which are diving and growing quickly. This will depend on the particular drug or combination of drugs you are being administered. Due to this, it is possible to experience side effects like hair loss, weight loss, weakness in joints and others. Usually, these side effects are temporary since healthy cells recover fast. If you suffer from any side-effect, then it’s best to inform your consultant immediately.
