Egg Donation has become quite common and is done under an assisted reproduction treatment. Here, a woman donor donates her egg, giving opportunity to an infertile woman to conceive. The oocytes from the donor are combined with spermatozoa from the recipient couple to produce embryos. These embryos are then transferred to the recipient couple in order to achieve pregnancy.
The screening process
- Egg donors go through an initial screening to determine their ability to produce eggs. The donor who has passed the fertility screening steps can be matched with a recipient couple.
- After that, the donor is tested for several factors including blood type, infectious diseases, drug use and overall health.
- The donor’s family history will be assessed through blood tests to be aware of possible hereditary diseases or genetic disorders like sickle cell anemia, thalassemia etc.
- After the completion of above tests, the donor meets a psychologist to ensure that she is aware of the risks and benefits of the procedure and fully understands what the process entails.
